The Fort 5-1-2010
“Plan B”
By Rich Morgan
I met up with my buddies Josh and Dickey at the Fort DeSoto boat ramp for a tarpon trip at the Skyway Bridge. Mother Nature had other plans for us with fifteen knot winds out of the South, so we went to "Plan B".
We drifted the shallow flats in our favorite areas of DeSoto for trout, tossing a various assortment of atificials. After I got things started with a respectable bluefish, Dickey had the hot hand with the trout boating a few keeper size fish on pink Gulp swimming mullets, while Josh weeded through some smaller fish.
After a short move I finally got in on the trout action. Tossing a Nuclear Chicken Gulp shrimp, I landed three decent trout for the ice box, while Josh and Dickey kept sifting through some smaller fish.
The wind at this point was making it almost impossible to keep the boat positioned on the channel edge that we were fishing, so I suggested a move to a protected cove to get out of the wind, and maybe even find a redfish. Josh really liked that idea, reeling in his personal best redfish.

After fan-casting the area looking for another red, we moved along the shoreline to a lone dock that looked real fishy. It was. I thought I was hooked up on a red, but turned out to be a very angry trout.

Sometimes you've got to take the cards Mother Nature deals you.
Thanks for the report Rich, it looks like everyone is getting in on the action these days…check out his website, keepmbent.com.
